I just installed RC3 on my laptop (sony vaio FX705, which has a ATI Rage
Mobility M/P) and I'm having similar problems.

Things are OK in XFree 3.3.6, but I get weird effects in XFree 4.2.1
X does start, but I get vertical bars on the screen in a different color
(where the whole screen should be solid blue). I've tried with both the
ati driver from the mandrake install, and with the ati.2 driver, same
story.

One thing I did notice is that though the log shows X seeing that the
laptop screen has DCC, it follows in the log that there is an error
reading the dcc info. (I can't give the log, it's already been
overwritten with the XFree 3.3.6 one)

So it might be a good idea to tweak the frequency range. Erm... So does
anyone have any ideas on what to set them to? Are LCDs always at 60 Hz
vertical?

Wouter
