Yes, it was/is.  But my specific want/need is/was the kernel specfile,
and specifically because I wanted to use it to package up my
kernel-source built kernel.  That is why I think it would be nice to
keep the specfile within kernel-source (binary) package.  It could
then be used (assuming my changes were liked and incorporated) to
package up a kernel built in the /usr/src/linux that kernel-source
installed.

I was thinking so too.  I have successfully used it to install (via
RPM) my custom kernel (based on the 2.4.18-8.1mdk update kernel) on my
production 8.2 boxes.  Worked just like the regular mandrake RPM.

Me too.  That is no problem though.

I hope it's not too intrusive.  It basically wraps all of the
"actually patch and build the kernel" parts of the specfile with a
conditional macro, which causes those parts to be skipped when only
packaging.

I will send it to Jaun, although my last couple of messages to him
(about other things) went unanswered.  I dunno if he is ignoring
non-9.0 critical mail or what.
