Many moons before Linux, I saw a similar type of deep repetitive
directory structure created by a tar-like program because of a bug in
the curdir() library routine on a SVR2 system.  The failure was related
to a problem reading /etc/mnttab during the search upward for the root
directory from a relative directory starting point.

I've now exhausted my memory recollection ability and need to rest
before reminiscing further...
