It turned out not to be related to the X drivers/config at all! Setting 'vga=3847' in the lilo.conf, and a reboot solved all of my problems! I'm not sure if there's anything to be done at the mandrake end for this. I probably caused this problem myself by messing with the lilo settings during install (I played around with the settings, switching from lilo to grub to lilo.
