I did join the list, and luckily some one there has had the same
problem, and _did_ manage to find a solution.
It turned out not to be related to the X drivers/config at all! Setting 
'vga=3847' in the lilo.conf, and a reboot solved all of my problems!

I'm not sure if there's anything to be done at the mandrake end for
this. I probably caused this problem myself by messing with the lilo
settings during install (I played around with the settings, switching
from lilo to grub to lilo. This will teach me to be more decisive:-)
I just didn't connect that to my X problems, up until now.
