Now that 9.0 is out, and work for 9.1/10.0 will start, can we please
get committment from Mandrake that _all_ forms of modifying anything
in /usr will be eliminated? I am willing to help in identifying and
submitting modifications where I can in working towards this goal.

This is an important goal. I am sure I am not the only user that
wants to be able to nfs mount /usr. Anyone with even a
medium-to-largish size farm of Mandrake boxes could/should be NFS
mounting /usr.

To this end, I will start with this one:

- drakfont tries to add fonts to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont

Fonts added by drakfont on individual machines should be place in /var
somewhere. Perhaps /var/X11R6/...

As an additional benefit, the system administrator should be able to
add fonts to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont on the /usr NFS server.
Perhaps drakfont should check the state of /usr and see if it is a)
mounted read-only and can be remounted read-write for the operation of
adding fonts or b) if it is NFS mounted and add fonts to
/var/X11R6/... if it is.

The second issue with regards to having a read-only or NFS mounted
/usr is urpmi. urpmi needs to be modified so that it can either a)
be configured to not install into a defined directory hierarchy, such
as /usr or b) auto-magically detect that a given directory hierarchy
is nfs mounted and not try to install into it. A gravy item here
would be to have uprmi "verify" the state of files in an NFS-mounted
hierarchy and warn/error about files that are not correct.

Thots?

b.
