Those are two examples of gnome programs failing. I also tried making a 
new account (which I assume should have fresh settings or no settings) 
but all that did was show the gnome loading screen and bring me back to kdm.
That probably isn't enough information to diagnose anything but I would 
be happy to provide clippings of settings files.
