Often this is your cd player app is looking for a
device file (/dev/cdrom) that doesn't exist.  Check if
that's the case, and either:
1) tell your cd player app to use the right device
(/dev/hdc, /dev/scd0, or whatever)
2) hard link /dev/cdrom to the right device
cd /dev
ln hdc cdrom
for example.  That used to be done on first boot by
Mandrake but maybe not anymore?
