You are free to do that, but people who build their own kernel usually
know what they do, so they will rebuild the nvidia driver before
rebooting.
My own NVIDIA_kernel packages have the version number of the used
kernel included in the name, analogue to the kernel package:
rpm -qa|fgrep kernel
gives me this:
kernel-2.4.18.6mdk-1-1mdk
kernel-2.4.19.16mdk-1-1mdk
kernel-source-2.4.19-16mdk
NVIDIA_kernel2.4.18.6mdk-1.0-2960
NVIDIA_kernel2.4.19.16mdk-1.0-3123
