  My only suggestion is: Stick to the current tramp package 'till Kyle
  resurfaces somewhere (Kyle = tramp maintainer and heavy gnus
  dude). It *seems* that he graduated this year, because his website
  at the Univ he was in doesn't exist anymore, and he hasn't been seen
  on any malinglists nor newsgroups in a few weeks, and the current
  tramp is...an absolute PITA, truth be told.

  If you want, I can let you know when things get back on track with
  it, most of the local LUG admins follow tramp very closely, so I
  always know what's going on :)
