Current situation with fonts is terrible. Year ago I had font server installed on remote machine and used it on clients, this days to have AA enables Xft need to have direct access to font files, so I had to mount font directory, but since my network is slow I had a lot of problems with big Unicode fonts ( Xft loads every encoding not the one that is used) so I had to copy fonts to every machine.Xftconfig and xftcache helps a little bit because with cache file Xft does not have to read every single file to determine encodings and properties font provides.
