With KDE 3.1 beta 2 installed I imported various TTF fonts using
drakfont ... and they were appearing un-anti-aliased.
On inspection this is because /etc/fonts/fonts.conf is missing the line
marked with ###:
<!-- Font directory list configured on Wed Nov 6 22:40:16 CET 2002 -->
<dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1</dir>
<dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont/ttf</dir> ###
<dir>/usr/share/fonts</dir>
<dir>~/.fonts</dir>
Make the change, restart X, restart KDE ... and voila! beautiful
anti-aliased TrueType fonts :)
