> I think a more feature based software strategy could be better, no ? Yes, you are right, but, then this is the problem of one apps for one task. This is exactly what Microsoft is doing, and we all now that the end user will not take a look at the alternatives, even if it is better. I don't think that people are so dumb they can choose between Konqueror and Mozilla. All they have to do is to try. They may be afraid of doing something wrong, to crash the computer, but hey, this is not W9x, they need to gain confdence.
Even if it good for end user to have one apps for one tasks, how do we choose ? We choose all kde, because kde is the default desktop ? What about the gimp, who does not fit very well with all kde apps ? Ok, if Geramik become the default theme, it will work, but, the ergonomy is no the same, the handling of mouse click can be changed, etc, and, if someone choose to have the menu bar on the top of the screen ( a la MacOS ), it will not work. So, the user should be aware of this. There is more than a way to program a graphical program under linux. If he know the problem, he can ovecome it. People can still found their way in all types of supermarket, they only need to be aware that if they want , they can. Of course, the differences should be kept at the minimum, but, I don't see a problem of having one or two apps to do a task. Just say to the user to choose. Even if there is no real differences for him.... On the other hand, 6 IM client is a lot. I think that gaim and kopete should be enough ( didn't tried the others, but this two were having the much connectivity. ) And, of course, lack of Multimedia tools is no good. By discussing of that, a selection of software for old pc ( such a pentium, and so on ) will be great. Instead of installing, KDE, Gnome, and other big software, just use IceWm, abiword, in order to ease the reuse of old hardware. Would be very great for school, or to get into a market that does not exist anymore for Microsoft. For example, a installation, a detection of the capacities, and the system automatically choose the most appropriate software. A Pentium 166 ? => Light desktop choosen A Athlon 3Ghz with 1Ghz => 3D-ultra-shiny-effects-desktop Mick
