Actually, you don't _need_ to edit the system fonts.conf file. Just copying "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/6x13-ISO8859-1.pcf.gz" (or whatever) to "~/.fonts/" worked for me. Copying that font made "Fixed 10" (Pango description) show up as "-misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso8859-1" (XFLD). Note, this only affected the rendering of "Fixed 10".
