profiles and lilo entries AFAIK wouldn't help much when disconnecting a
machine from a network while it's running. For example, a local LDAP
slave (as we have on our 2 linux laptops) doesn't work if the interface
is up but the cable is unplugged, until the interface is taken down (and
then disconnected auth works).

I tried ifplugd, but it didn't work on any of the cards I have
(ne2k-pci, 3c589_cs), so I didn't patch the broken init script. If
someone else wants to test, I can put the SRPM/RPM up.
