         Component: kernel-2.4.19.16mdk
           Summary: Intel ICH4 based Motherboards-- sound and IDE DMA do not
                    work
           Version: 1-1mdk
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: All

        ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The intel motherboards with the ICH4 controller have severe problems with kernel
2.4.19.16mdk.
a) On boot up, the message

b) trying to start up dma does not work.
hdparm /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 multcount    = 16 (on)
 IO_support   =  0 (default 16-bit)
 unmaskirq    =  0 (off)
 using_dma    =  0 (off)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    =  8 (on)
 geometry     = 1868/255/63, sectors = 30015216, start = 0

]>hdparm -d1 /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 setting using_dma to 1 (on)
 HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
 using_dma    =  0 (off)

The disks are very slow.

c) Sound does not work. The standare oss drivers do not load at all. -- error
that the codec cannot be intialised. The alsa drivers load fine, but again
no sound. (again using the onboard sound ICH4 sound card)

------- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED]  2002-12-02 21:39 -------
The new 2.4.20-0.6mdk kernel from cooker appears to solve these problems.The error
message ( resource conflict) still remains, but according to Alan Cox, the kernel
actually fixes the incomplete Bios setup which apparently triggers this message. Both
sound (under oss, but apparently not under ALSA) and the ide bus seems to work (
kernel compiles are 20 min or so, rather than 12 hours, hdparm reports 300MB/s rate
from cache, and 16MB/s rate from disk read, rather than 80 and 2.)
