john the ripper don't work if the current dir doesn't contain some files (
john.ini, and other ).
The solution is go to /usr/share/john/ and to launch it.
This is not specified in the documentation. I think it should be documented.
Another solution is to change the configuration files in the Makefile, as
Debian is doing.
