OK.. I finally solved my problem by disabling AA in gnome by setting GDK_USE_XFT=0. Based on previous emails, it looks like a freetype2 bug? I'm running Han Boetes's freetype2-2.1.3-1mdk version. I'll install cookers freetype2-2.1.3-2mdk and see if that solves my AA problem. Thanks John
