To make master CD, and install a lot of server not from scratch, we use
"mondo".
It makes a bootable CDs which can automatically install an clone server
(~same hardware).
It's possble to launch a script at the end of the restoration, to adapte
the config (hostname, IP...)

With the same idea, there's "mkcdrec".

And Targeted at configuration management, there's the promising system
imager/installer.

Concerning tape, I tink that I read that if you have a bootable tape
drive (HP on button recovery)
it's handled by the bios (like CD) like a floppy at boot. So having a
bootable image on it should do it (what name/format ?).
And every program aimed at bootable CD backup/disaster recovery should
do it.
