           Product: urpmi
         Component: program
           Summary: Better status/progress reporting
           Version: 4.1-9mdk
          Platform: All
        OS/Version: All
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
        AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
        ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

(1) There is a long delay on startup. If MandrakeUpdate was started from a
terminal, get messages like
    "examining synthesis file"
This should be displayed in a graphical status box, rather than making the user
wonder if the program had failed to start.

(2) The dialog that says
"Please wait, contacting mirror to update"
should report which mirror was contacted, and the status of the contact.

(3) Sometimes it takes a long time to download the listing from the server. I
see this is just an ftp transaction, so it should be easy to determine and
display the progress of the transaction. But the GUI just sits there, looking
stupid. The first time, I wondered if it hadn't hung up.

(4) The existing dialogs have a tendency to pop up during the program's
execution, which can be really annoying if you're doing something else at the
same time. It would be better to have a single status box that can be put to
the side, and to only raise a dialog if something goes wrong (and perhaps, when
the update is complete).

------- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2002-12-09 19:53 -------
1- I don't have this problem. Do you use any special lists? Or do you use a very
very slow computer? Do you know at what exact point it slows down like that?

2- Actually we use the "urpmi" backend, and there is no callback for that, to my
knowledge; Francois, do you think a callback in "sub update_media" of that kind
would be a good idea?

3- same

4- there is such a wish in my wishlist, I'll try to do that for 9.1 if possible
