The Storage Network Industry Association (SNIA) has their own spec, which is more complete thatn any MS docs, and is preferred by everyone else. I don't think MS would be too interested in unix extensions ;-) (which is mostly what the CIFS module has over smbfs at the moment). More worrying are patents on some of the authentication aspects of MS's implementation of CIFS.
