When you do 'make install' in the kernel source tree, the scripts that
are called will generate an initrd to match the kernel you're
installing.

'man mkinitrd' for info on how to do it manually.

'grep initrd /sbin/installkernel' will lead you to
/usr/share/loader/make-initrd which has a little intelligence about what
it's doing.
