Lame is 100% GPL, same as xvid. Still there are these patent problems.

That's not true, only ffmpeg's libavcodec is included.

The main missing feature would be mp3 encoding support. But I'd be
cautious, maybe mencoder can't stay, as it can generate mpeg4.
