Looking at worst case scenarios is not the way to make decisions (with
the exception of contingency planning).  The worst case scenario (maybe
not *the* worst case scenario, but you get the drift) is that I'll open
the refrigerator door and see various demons from antiquity flying
around who then attack me and tear me to shreds.  Is that a possibility?
Definitely.  Does this prevent me from going up and getting another Coke
from the fridge?  Not really.

Yes, that whole bit was contrived and exaggerated, but making decisions
based strictly on the worst case (or the best case, or even averaging
the worst and best cases) is foolhardy, imo.
