If someone is interested, i could setup a grub_hd.img floppy image
(~120K) that would propose:
title Mandrake is on the first drive & partition #1
root (hd0,0)
kernel /isolinux/alt0/vmlinuz vga=788
initrd /isolinux/alt0/all.rdz
title Mandrake is on the first drive & partition #2
root (hd0,1)
kernel /isolinux/alt0/vmlinuz vga=788
initrd /isolinux/alt0/all.rdz
title Mandrake is in directory foo
root (hd0,0)
kernel /foo/isolinux/alt0/vmlinuz vga=788
initrd /foo/isolinux/alt0/all.rdz
one would just have to:
- either change in the floppy menu.lst to adapt to one's need
- or edit on the fly using grub editor

NB: grub handles ext2/fat/jfs/reiserfs/xfs, which is even better than
stage1!
