I can't reproduce the bug anymore. I'm not sure if it's because I upgraded KDE
and a missing file appeared or just because fam works better.
Whatever I would consider the bug gone... at least for the whole distro.

With the new Mandrake fam is intalled by default with xinetd (necessary for KDE3).
On my system (kernel 2.4.19-17) it keeps polling the files all the time. This is
very annoying for my laptop because the hard drive cannot stop spinning because
of that (there is also windowmaker without --no-polling but that is another story).
I think the best solution would be to compile fam with the Dnotify patch so that
it trust the kernel and then doesn't poll anything else.
