Interesting. I had desktop wide /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/ftp settings, which were pointing ftp:// to mozilla. Removing the above directory fixed things. However, I can't find what schema file installs that gconf key. Possibly from an older package which I have since upgraded.
