Product: XFree86-server
Component: XFree86-server
Summary: i845 Driver does not report correct color depth
Version: 4.3-0.20030210.1mdk
Platform: PC
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: critical
Priority: P4
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
It appears that the support for the Intel i845G chipset (which is used in many
Dell desktops) is unable to return the correct color depth to apps. X11
applications which depend on the screen's color depth to function properly are
severely affected. For example, the 3D game BZFlag has a very dark screen, and
the brightness control is unavailable because the game cannot determine the
screen depth. This is a mild example. A more severe example can be seen in any
application that depends on the Evas (Enlightenment Canvas) library. Any program
that is linked to libevas (tested using 1.0 CVS) will immediately crash on
startup. A backtrace pointed to a function which attempted to use the screen
depth information, which was reported as 0. I am sure there are other apps that
are affected by this as well.
