Further info...
I also wasn't able to use my keyboard (which is an Apple Mac USB keyboard). So I
basically had to cancel the install.
On reboot I then tried a 'linux noauto' to prevent hardware detection. My mouse
still behaved as above, but I could now use my keyboard.
