When I selected mplayer-gui a box popped up for the dependency on mplayer-skins.
The box didn't go away, but I was able to select other packages.
At some point (I was closing off, so I may have touched another button at the bottom
of
the window) the popup went away, but the next screen I saw was the task-selection
screen :-( It had forgotten all my package selections....
