plugged in a USB mouse on bootup of laptop. The touchpad still worked but the
external USB mouse did not. Went to the mouse config page and tried to apply the
new mouse properties. The mouse type was correctly slected but there was no way
to test the wheel or apply the changes. Had to reboot (for a different reason)
and now the mouse works.
