Good idea posting the config. Here's mine:
Section "InputDevice"
     Identifier     "Mouse"
     Driver         "mouse"
     Option         "Device"                 "/dev/gpmdata"
     Option         "Protocol"               "ImPS/2"
     Option         "Buttons"                "5"
     Option         "Emulate3Buttons"        "No"
     Option         "SendCoreEvents"         "True"
     Option         "ZAxisMapping"           "4 5"
EndSection

The sendcoreevents bit was part of an experiment to get the wheel working. It didn't
work.  Here's my /etc/sysconfig/mouse since I use gpm I guess it's relevant:
MOUSETYPE="imps2 -3 -a 3 -d 20 -r 20 -Rimps2"
XMOUSETYPE=IMPS/2
XEMU3=no
WHEEL=yes
FULLNAME="Logitech Cordless Wheel Mouse PS/2"
device=misc/psaux

I know it looks funky, but it has worked for years with little tweaking. (The wheel
worked too before the new year).

Maybe this has to do with the latest patch to X.

I can't say when exactly this problem came up since the current version is the first
that would work for me since about the new year. The previous version worked, but the
mouse didn't work at all.
If it helps, I use X with gpm (has always worked before). The pointer in question is
a Logitech Trackman Wheel and it works with the standard X "mouse" driver and the
"ImPS2" protocol for both gpm and X.
