This is an interesting report.

In fact, the real ALSA module does not support the nforce2. There is a
patch applied to allow this module to load with nforce2 boards.

However, it has not been tested really well, so it would be really nice
if you could check that all the input and output channels work with the
ALSA module and these two lines in modules.conf.

Thanks.

oss is the default driver for the nforce2 audio; this does not allow
multi-channel sound. snd-intel8x0 is in an fact available option in draksound.
Once this is set, and the volume has been unmuted and set to a reasonable
level, multi-channel sound is possible.
Note: I have not put any effort into testing the OSS sound compatibility; and
the options suggested on the ALSA site for this card are not appropriate for
Mandrake 9.1. This is the relevant lines from /etc/modules.conf:
alias snd-slot-0 snd-intel8x0
above snd-intel8x0 snd-pcm-oss

Thanks,
