Maybe you could try sending exact model and problem description to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] . He is creating a list of HP/Compaq laptops which have broken
ACPI bioses. Then there's a chance that future bios upgrades will solve your
problem. See

I have as my boot params the defaults, including acpi=on. 
 
The boot (grub entry `linux-nonfb') stops with these as the last few messages: 
 
ACPI: Subsystem revision 20030122 
PCI: PCI BIOS revision 2.10 entry at 0xfd7ae, last bus=1 
PCI: Using configuration type 1 
 
After changing acpi=off, boot continues as normal. 
 
Let's see, what else about the platform? It has a Phoenix BIOS...
