It is interesting to note that the three of us have systems with a large amount of memory (1024M or more) and the Gforce Ti series of video cards. Could it be an issue with the combination of the install kernel, large amount of memory, and the Gforce Ti series of cards? For me the nv driver works fine (if slowly) once the system is installed, even with the standard (small memory) kernel. The display blanks, and the keyboard LEDs start to blink. This problem has been around for a while, and will be an issue if 9.1 releases without a good fix in place. I recently did an RC1 install, and used text mode after finding this problem was still present.
