This does not occur when using the SDL audio driver (-ao sdl). This happens with the packaged mplayer and also with a compilation of MPlayer from the sources. Using OGLE DVD player, there is a similar problem : when playing DVD, the sound is choppy, but the video plays too fast. Howover, this does not occur with Xine when playing the exact same files, either with oss and alsa9 drivers.
