On my IBM Thinkpad 600X (this series is about 3 years old), the gnome battery monitor works with acpi (by default, no config necessary etc), and after some fiddling, kacpi works ok for me too. Just had to add a few modules to /etc/modules (battery, ac, thermal etc), since I am sticking with rc1 until rc2 is out ... pwsuspend just told me to boot with an extra arg to lilo, but did nothing else ...
