I remember there was some problems with gcc-2.96, especially depending of the
exact release of the mdk package.

I would rather advice to upgrade your distro, as 8.1 is quite old now,
provided you can download more recent one. Otherwise, you'd better update
your gcc version rather than downgrade it, maybe just by rebuild current gcc
src package.
