I first installed ltsp.org
Then I edited
/etc/sysconfig/desktop
to this
# DISPLAYMANAGER=mdkkdm
# DESKTOP=KDE
# DISPLAYMANAGER=mdkkdm
DISPLAYMANAGER=gdm
DESKTOP=icewm
to take the change in effect, I typed:
telinit 3; sleep 15; telinit 5 &
it killed X like it should, it gave me a text prompt, and never came back from 3
after typeing telinit 5, init 5 as root
