This still occurs in rc2. Just run menuconfig and go the the sound/alsa.
Menuconfig has encountered a possible error in one of the kernel's
configuration files and is unable to continue. Here is the error
report:

Installed kernel-source using urpmi, then did a : make menuconfig, set up my
whole kernel and arrived in the SOUND section. All was fine until i selected
ALSA then menuconfig died saying that ALSA wasn't present in the tree. It's
reproducible.
