I agree. This "sorry state of affairs" is more a reflection on nVidia. Their drivers are clearly more fragile than they'd like us to believe. They're attempting to prove that their closed driver model provides at least as good results as open source driver development, and the only conclusions that the linux community can draw are that (a) they're wrong, and it can't be done, or (b) they're right, and it's possible, but they're not very good at driver development. Hopefully the end result will be a lessening of the pro-nVidia slant of the linux community, leaving room for someone else to come in and try to do it better. It should be much easier for someone at ATI, Matrox, or some other company to get more resources for linux development if it becomes obvious that nVidia's position isn't as strong as they pretend.
