After further investigation, I have discovered that this was a result of a bad ISO
image that
was downloaded.
I have since download an image from another mirror, and this has solved the problem.
My sincerest appologies to all those involved.

Found to be present in the new MDK 9.1 RC2
There are some MAJOR problems with the new installer:
When selecting packages/categories to be installed, _none_ of them are
installed. The onle UI that's installed is TWM, or whatever.
If you select the KDE/Gnome/Office categories to be installed, it/they will
not be installed.
Un/selecting packages/categories will not change the total size, (Likely
related to above)
