When OOo is run in the Japanese locale, squares are displayed in place of Japanese characters throughout the menus and dialogs. I ran OOo under the en_US locale and changed the default font substitution Andale Sans Ui ---> Luxi Sans [IIRC] to Andale Sans Ui ---> Kochi Gothic and when I reran OOo under the Japanese locale, all of the Japanese characters appeared correctly. Another solution to this font problem would be to remove the font substitution altogether. However, Kochi Gothic looks much better than Andale Sans UI.
