Really, with a new root?

# rm -fR .gconf* .gnome* .gtkrc-* .kde .metacity .qt .recently-used .xsession-errors

# echo DESKTOP=GNOME > .desktop

# startx

It starts with a solid red, that is changed in blue, then the standard wavy blue
background is set.

# cat .xsession-errors
/etc/gnome/gnomerc: line 14: /root/.gnome2/session-manual: No such file or directory
