Barley, usually pearl barley, is sold in grocery stores where the plastic
bags of split peas and beans, like pinto beans, are. Sometimes it's loose
in bins along with the brown rice, etc. You scoop it into a plastic bag or
a recyclable one you bring along for the occasion. You can use the recipe
on the bag, one from this list, or improvise. You have to have mushrooms
and barley. The optional ingredients are beef bones, onions, celery,
carrots, parsley, bay leaf, salt and pepper. I do it with all of the above,
except sometimes without the beef. You can also use beef or vegetable broth
for some or all of the liquid It takes about forty minutes of simmering to
cook the barley. Everything else should be done by that time.

Subject: [CnD] beef barley soup

A friend wants to make this, and I think someone posted a recipe for this
soup on this list within the past few months. He wants to know if you can
use Quaker barley cereal for this or, if not, where do you get the barley?
Thanks.
Sharon
