Hi Britney,
Put the chicken in the water when it is cold. Make sure you have a big
enough pot to cover the chicken. You can cook on medium high until the water
starts to boil. Then turn it down to low. You should be able to hear it
slightly boiling. I would boil for about 30 minutes once it starts to
simmer. If you want to keep the broth for cooking, put a pan in your sink,
put a strainer in the pan, and pour the chicken pot into the strainer. Lift the strainer out and I would put the chicken out on a plate
to let it cool for about another 30 minutes. Then pull the meat off of the
bone. I wouldn't give the dog the fat if he or she is sick. You can freeze the broth. If you don't want to keep the broth, you could just pour the meat into the strainer and skip the pot under it.

I hope your puppy feels better soon. I have boiled many pots of chicken, hamburger, and rice for my guide dogs in the past 39 years when they were not well.

Hello list,
I don't know if this is appropriate for the list, but my dog is sick, and
I'm needing to boil him some chicken for his stomach.  But I've never
boiled chicken before...I'm not a very experienced cook. Could someone
tell me please how long I should boil the chicken for...should I put the
chicken in the water before the water is boiling or after?  And what's the
best way of getting the chicken out of the water once it's done? How can
you tell when it's done when it's so hot?  Any help anyone can give me
would be hugely appreciated.
