Scallops can be cooked a little past doneness without getting tough, unlike shrimp. Also, they can be eaten raw. So, as long as they are hot all the way through and feel firm, you're okay. The big sea scallops take about 4 or 5 minutes if you are cooking them on high or medium high in a frying pan
Bay scallops, much smaller, are done in just a couple of minutes.
My rule of thumb - taste one.
