Hi Brittany,
It sounds to me like you over cooked your burgers.  The heat was probably fine. 
 If your meat was very lean, you could have used some cooking spray, or a 
little oil on your pan to prevent sticking.  The length of time you cook a 
burger on each side depends on how thick they are.  A good test is to touch the 
top and feel how firm the meat is; it will get more firm as it cooks.
Generally, I cook a burger for about five minutes per side on medium heat.  
Since every stove is different, you may want to adjust the times according to 
your preference, and the stove you are using.
