Hi, every one,
It is bitterly cold where I live, so I decided I needed a big pot of something
simmering on the stove. So, here is my version of split pea soup

1 bag split peas
2 quarts cold water
2 large onions chopped
3 carrots chopped
3 stalks celery chopped
3 bay leaves
a pinch of ground cloves
about 2 tablespoons ham soup base (from Penzeys)
2 small ham steaks, diced
Put the split peas in 2 quarts of cold water with the bay leaves and a pinch of
ground cloves. Bring to a boil and then lower the heat to medium. Chop the
vegetables and add to the pot. Let simmer covered for about two hours. Add
the diced ham; simmer uncovered for another hour or so.
(note:) The soup base is very salty, so you probably won't need to add salt.
I will probably add some black pepper toward the end of the cooking.
The web site for Penzeys is:
