Hi, Lisa,
I also have one of the original George Foreman grills, the small one that will 
hold two hamburger patties, or one steak.  I find that when the sizzling quiets 
down some, the meat is done.  There is a click when the light goes out 
signaling that the grill is hot, about five minutes after it is plugged in.
