Ramikins are small bowls made to be baked in ovens. They're used to make egg custards and in that application they get put into a pan of cold water which is placed in the oven when filled to 2/3 their capacity with egg custard mixture then baked in the oven. The water creates steam so custards don't dry out from the heat. In other applications they can be used to fill with chocolate mousse and put into the refrigerator to set. In either case you're having desserts from them. I've held ramikins made from glass, and I've held earthenware ramikins. They're about 3 inches across at top internal diameter and slight smaller at bottom internal diameter and about two inches tall. hth.
